Journalist Sarah Hawes has been joining our Pilates classes – she’s halfway through a 6-week course.
I think you can change your life in three weeks – but obviously it depends what you want to achieve.
For me, three weeks ago, I started Pilates…physio-led Pilates.
I didn’t know what to expect, didn’t know what I’d be doing and certainly didn’t know I’d be thinking about what I’d heard in the hour’s class each week throughout the rest of the week.
But that’s exactly what’s happening.
The classes allow your body to relax, heal, plus be challenged with the aim of re-aligning the body, identifying musculoskeletal problems and gently correcting them.
It takes many, many, conscious thoughts to change how we stand, move and correct our posture but every day I feel I’m making progress.
I’ve never spent any time stretching, but now I’m doing it twice a day, with the words ‘bone by bone’ in my mind at all times!
I’m using two different stretches:
1. Lay on the floor, tuck your pelvis in then push up into a bridge but…as you push up, you need to feel each bone lifting off the ground, then being placed back down onto the floor on the way back down.
2. Stand up straight and bend over to try and touch the floor – again, feeling every bone on the way down, hang for a while, breathe, try to get lower and then come up, bone by bone again.
These stretches really do make you feel good and supple and are especially good for people who don’t get much movement through the day, or feel a bit stiff!
I spend a lot of the day thinking about my posture – how I’m standing, sitting, moving…and trying to correct it using what I’ve learnt and done in the pilates class.
Obviously you can’t just lie down and do Pilates anywhere, but you can incorporate it into your life to make a long-lasting difference.
Future good health is made today!
